The Xiaomi Redmi Note 9 disappointed us with its photo performance. Our observations were sent to the teams of engineers of the Chinese brand and an update was offered to us, with the key to an improvement in performance.

Those who follow the Digital tests probably did not miss that of the Xiaomi Redmi Note 9, published in early June. As a reminder, we were rather disappointed by the poor performance of the smartphone in the photo, especially those related to the main module and its 48-megapixel sensor.

Whether day or night, the Redmi Note 9 abused the smoothing and forgot to offer faithful colors. Disappointing results, even for a smartphone sold for less than € 200, sanctioned, at the end of the test, with a rating of only 2 stars in the photo. We then incriminate an image processing problem, linked to the use of a MediaTek SoC.

The reaction of the Chinese manufacturer was immediate. We were informed by the Xiaomi France teams that the engineers of the company were going to be informed of our remarks and observations. A few days later, Xiaomi provided us with a software update for its Redmi Note , and we submitted it again to our usual battery of tests.

Already on our test in good light conditions, the result is quite different. It is easy to note that the update brings more detail by using much less smoothing. The contrast enhancement has been slightly enhanced, further enhancing the perception of image details. According to the Exif snapshot data, the Redmi Note 9 has not changed much in its shooting and retains a sensitivity at ISO 100 and a trigger at 1/100. It is therefore at the level of image processing that the magic operates. Not everything has become perfect, the color rendering suffers from a few inaccuracies and the image quality drops slightly in the corners. But the Redmi Note 9 finds a level at which it was expected.

The ultra wide-angle module does not offer better shots with this update. It remains relatively average, as very often on mobiles in this price range.

The improved results of the main module of  Redmi Note 9 translate into a rating from 2 to 3 stars for the Photo part. An increase which also leads to an increase in the total test score of the smartphone, which goes from 3 to 4 stars. Something to remind all smartphone manufacturers of the importance of not rushing something as important as image processing.

For now, the update is not yet available to all Redmi Note 9 users. Xiaomi promises that it will be offered “over-the-air” in the coming weeks, probably on the deployment of other software adjustments.
